The Places I Keep Ending Up in Sherman and Denison

What do I actually like about living in Sherman and Denison?

I've been trying to write this for a few days and kept running into the same problem.

Every version sounded like a tourism brochure.

I don't want to write a tourism brochure.

If you want a list of attractions, there are plenty of those already floating around the internet. They'll tell you about Lake Texoma, historic downtowns, annual events, and all the other things you're supposed to mention.

And to be fair, Lake Texoma is a huge draw. People move here specifically because it's here.

I'm just probably not the guy to tell you where to launch your boat.

My Sherman and Denison looks different.

Most mornings start at White Rabbit.

Not because I'm some coffee snob. I drink an Americano. That's basically coffee stripped down to its most boring form.

But White Rabbit has become one of those places where you can't sit for fifteen minutes without running into someone you know or hearing about something happening around town.

Half the time I walk in planning to stay ten minutes and leave an hour later.

That's usually a good sign.

The older I get, the more I judge a town by its coffee shops.

Not the coffee.

The people.

A little later in the day, there's a decent chance I'll find myself wandering around downtown Sherman or downtown Denison for no particular reason.

That's one thing I don't think people understand until they live here.

You don't always need a destination.

Sometimes it's enough to just walk around and see what's changed.

A new business opened.

A building got renovated.

Somebody had an idea and decided to bet on this town.

I like places where people are still willing to do that.

Maybe that's why I spend so much time downtown.

Or maybe I just like old brick buildings.

Probably both.

When somebody asks me where to get a steak, I don't have to think very long.

Doc's Old Fashioned.

Done.

There are fancier opinions available.

That's mine.

And if it's been a long day, I'll probably end up at Copacetic Cowboy or Ash & Barrel.

One of the funniest things about getting older is realizing you're willing to pay extra for places that aren't loud.

Give me a good bourbon, decent conversation, and a chair that doesn't make me want to leave after twenty minutes.

That's luxury.

Lately my go-to has been a Morning Sex and Cigarettes.

Which sounds like a bad life decision but happens to be an excellent drink.

For dinner, I'm just as likely to end up at 903 Brewers as anywhere else.

Good burger.

Good people.

No unnecessary complications.

The best local spots usually have that in common.

They know exactly what they are.

And they don't try too hard.

Honestly, that's probably what I like about Sherman and Denison too.

They don't try too hard.

They're not pretending to be Austin.

They're not trying to become Frisco.

They're just Sherman and Denison.

And somehow that feels increasingly rare.

As for summer evenings, you'll usually find me on the patio at The Post.

Not because I have profound thoughts to think.

Mostly because around sunset there's that brief window when Texas stops actively trying to kill you and sitting outside starts sounding like a good idea again.

Those evenings are easy to overlook when you live here.

They're also the things I think people remember.

Not the attractions.

Not the rankings.

Not the statistics.

Just a good drink, good food, familiar faces, and a town that feels comfortable in its own skin.

That's probably the best way I know how to describe living here.
